The scripture remarks in Jeremiah 6:16 (British and Foreign Bible Society, 1967) (RSV): “Thus says the Lord, stand by the road and ask for the ancient path, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls”. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is that ancient path because it was the path which the Saints, the Fathers and the Doctors of the Church walked. It has been the way of all the great Saints, a pioneer example being the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saint Theresa of the child Jesus, the youngest doctor of the Church, practiced devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was a member of Apostleship of Prayer from the age of twelve. Other Saints that also practiced devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus among others were St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Gertrude the Great, St. Mectilde of Helfta, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis de Sale, St. Bernard, St. Bonaventure and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque through whom our Lord Jesus Christ made this devotion publicly known.
